Simplifying House Moving with Colour Coding
Moving house can be a headache. I devised a method to make the process of moving smoother and more organised. I’m sharing it here in the hope that you might find it useful when you move house.
To begin with, when packing items at the old house, I assigned numbers to the boxes as well as coloured stickers. Each colour indicated a corresponding room for each box: living room, dining room, bedroom, study, garage… etc. I put the numbers and small-dot stickers on all sides of each box, ensuring that no matter how the boxes were placed or stacked, the numbers and colours would remain visible.
On the moving day, before the workers arrived at the new house, I posted notices for each room, indicating the colour label for each room, the number codes of the boxes belonging to that room, and the total number of boxes expected for the room. Then the workers moved the boxes to their respective rooms based on the colour codes. This proved to be much quicker than reading words like ‘Room 1’ or ‘Room 2’. My husband and I stationed ourselves on the ground floor and first floor respectively. As each box was delivered, we checked off the corresponding number on the notice. Finally, we verified the total count of boxes in accordance with the information on the notice.
The workers expressed their appreciation for this system, saying that it was clear and effective. They swiftly adapted to this arrangement and carried it out seamlessly. Those in the truck sorted the boxes according to colour labels, while others placed boxes of the same colour within their designated rooms. The entire process was super smooth. Later on, the workers even added a touch of enjoyment by betting on which room would be the first to have all numbers marked off. As such, the process, though physically demanding, was filled with laughter and fun! The moving job was completed rather quickly, and as the workers were leaving, they gave me a thumbs-up and praised, “Good System!”
I hope you find this method beneficial when you embark on your next house move!
