My Carpentry Workshop

After moving to the UK, I finally had the space to explore hobbies I couldn’t pursue in Hong Kong, one of which is woodworking. I once visited the house of my friend’s father in Australia. It was on a farm and had a huge carpentry workshop. I was thrilled to see a setup I had only seen in movies. I was very excited and asked him if I could do some real woodwork there, and he let me use the table saw to cut some wood. Ever since, I’ve dreamed of having my own workshop. So, after moving to the UK, I was determined to make that dream a reality.

There’s a 100-square-feet store room in my house that used to part of the garage. I think the space was perfect for a workshop conversion. The room was quite dark, so I hired an electrician to install proper lighting. Then, I painted the walls white to brighten up the space.

Next, I needed a workbench. The previous owner had left a potting table in the garden. I sawed it down to a more suitable height, added casters, and put a piece of wood for the worktop. Just like that, I had a workbench.

The garden bench was worn out, but the structure was sturdy

I also added a shelf, attached a tape measure to the side of the worktop, and fixed a magnetic tool bar to the leg

A carpentry workshop needs plenty of storage space. I started by setting up a wall to organise my tools, displaying the most frequently used ones for easy access.

I tried a few layouts and finally found this one to be the most handy

I store screws and nails in this box, using the real objects as labels instead of written labels, since I don’t really know how to distinguish their names

Then, I found some free furniture online, bought some cheap cabinets from charity shops,  and added some wood boards to build storage shelves.

Another major change was the flooring. The room had a concrete floor, which wasn’t great for long periods of standing, so I laid down rubber flooring. Not only was it practical, but it also made the whole workshop look much nicer!
