Three Fantastic Uses of Oranges

I purchased a bag of oranges that turned out to be terribly sour. So I decided to use them for making a cake. This Orange Upside-Down Cake is not only visually stunning but also incredibly delicious. I modified the recipe a little by shredding the rosemary and adding it to the syrup. It provided the perfect finishing touch to the taste of the cake!

When there are leftover oranges, making marmalade is another popular way to utilise them. I once created a four-panel comic based on my experience of making marmalade from oranges that had dried out after being left for too long.

In the UK, there is a type of orange called Seville Orange, which is available for purchase around January or February each year. These oranges are particularly high in pectin, making them ideal for making marmalade. However, when consumed fresh, they are sour, bitter, and dry. A friend of mine once unknowingly bought them to eat as fresh fruit and wondered why the stores would sell such poorly tasting oranges. Only later did he discover that Seville Oranges are not meant to be consumed that way.

Oranges with high pectin content can also be used to cook hair spray! Yes, you heard it right – you can cook hair spray! The method is simple: cut two oranges into small pieces and put them in a pot. Add two cups of water and simmer over medium heat until it reduces to one cup. Let it cool, strain out the residue, and transfer it into a spray bottle for use. When not in use, store it in the refrigerator. I don’t want to use hair sprays with chemicals, so this natural recipe is a great alternative! (Note: The recipe I found online suggests using one orange, but since my hair is thicker and requires a strong hold, I used two.)
